Beaches in Santorini, GreeceBeach Resorts and Nightlife on Santorini Island in Greece
Santorini's beaches offer unique volcanic black, red or white sand, the crystal blue Aegean Sea and lively nightlife.
Magical Santorini in the Greek islands is famous for its romantic sunsets, blue-domed churches and volcanic landscape. However, Santorini is also an island that can boast some of the finest beaches in the Mediterranean. The volcanic nature of the island has created beautiful beaches with uniquely coloured sand. While most beaches have black volcanic sand, there are also beaches with white, gray, and red sand or volcanic pebbles. The most popular beaches in Santorini are Kamari Beach, Perissa Beach, Monolithos Beach and Red Beach. The beaches are all accessible by public bus. Kamari Beach Santorini’s longest beach and the first beach to be developed as a holiday resort is also the busiest. Kamari is located on the eastern part of the island, 10 km from Santorini’s capital, Fira. The area offers tavernas, restaurants, bars, hotels and a variety of water sports and activities including scuba diving. Bring a mat and wear your sandals to the sea as the black volcanic pebbles become unbearably hot in summer. Perissa Beach Another popular black sand beach, Perissa is south of Kamari and 15 kilometeres south east of Fira. The beach’s most noticeable feature is Mesa Vouno, an enormous rock rising out of the sea. The village of Perissa is mostly a touristy town with a good variety of hotels, tavernas, restaurants, beach bars and night clubs. Monolithos Beach Monolithos Beach is a small, less touristy beach located 9 kilometers from Fira, in the area close to the airport. This golden sandy beach is ideal for families. There is a football pitch, a basketball court and a children’s play area. However, the area is susceptible to strong winds that sweeps and rattles the sand. Red Beach Located near the village and ancient site of Akrotini, Santorini’s Red Beach offers the most unique and stunning view. The beach gets its name from the lava red cliffs and red sand. You must walk past a rocky headland to see the beach and the slabs of red and black volcanic rocks behind it. The beach area itself is small and can get crowded quickly. Other BeachesSome of Santorini’s less popular beaches include Vlihada, Baxedes and Anmoudi. Vlihada is located in the south and is the area’s only nude beach. Baxedes is the main beach on the north part of the island near Oia. Anmoudi is a very small beach near the tiny fishing port located at the bottom of Oia’s cliff. Public Access and TransportationThe public beaches listed above are easily accessible from the main bus station in Fira. Fares range from 1,20 to 2 Euro. The bus station is located near Plateia Theotokopoulou, Fira’s main square. Bus schedules change frequently depending on the seasons but schedules are listed at the bus terminal.
