Gerakas Pennisula is a quiet beach on the Greek island of Zakynthos. The Ionian Eco Villagers properties are all owned by Greek locals who support wildlife conservation.

People travel to the Greek Islands for different reasons. Some are interested in the history, other visitors look for family-friendly beaches, younger crowds may want the fun night life, and many want to get away from the tourists and find a peaceful place to relax. For this last group of travelers, the Ionian Eco Villagers may offer an alternative and unique beach holiday. Visitors can get a true experience of unspoiled Greece in Gerakas.

Ionian Eco Villagers History

Started in 1993 by Yannis Vardakastanis in order to protect the island in which he grew up from mass tourism. He is also an advocate for conservation and protection of local wildlfe in the Ionian islands. Ionian Eco Villagers is a 2009 Conservation Award finalist for Tourism for Tomorrow. Yannis founded Earth, Sea, and Sky in collaboration with the eco-friendly Ionian Eco Villagers.

Earth, Sea, and Sky Partnership with Ionian Eco Villagers

Visitors may also be drawn towards staying in the cottages because of the eco-friendly atmosphere that exists on the properties and the surrounding areas. Ionian partners with Earth, Sea, and Sky. This non-profit group's mission is to protect the natural habitat and wildlife in Zakynthos. A large part of that mission includes protecting the nesting grounds that exist there for the Loggerhead Sea Turtles. Earth, Sea, and Sky provides an educational component, with the Wildlife Information Center, and opportunities for volunteers.

The Accommodations at Greece's Eco-Friendly Resort

There are a variety of accommodations for travelers to choose including studios, villas, apartments and a 3-bedroom farmhouse. The furnished accommodations also contain basic cooking equipment and a fridge if guests choose to cook themselves. The rooms are cleaned on a daily basis and include fresh linens and towels. All the properties are within walking distance to shops and the sandy beaches. Most properties have air conditioning, and the guests are encouraged to be conservative with the air conditioning. All the rooms have cooling fans.

The Best Time of Year to Visit Ionian Eco Villagers
