Greek Island Hopping to Mykonos for SeniorsHolidays on Mykonos Appeal to Both Older People and the Young
Mykonos is one of Greece's most popular islands, offering good beaches, excellent shopping and day-trips to Delos.
Mykonos, the setting of the "Shirley Valentine" film, offers good beaches, excellent shopping and day-trips to the neighbouring island of Delos, a World Heritage Site. Travel to Mykonos for SeniorsTravel to Mykonos in the Cyclades for seniors is straightforward as it has direct flights not only from Athens but also from several European cities including London, Brussels, Cologne and Rome. In addition many older people arrive on cruise ships. Furthermore for island-hopping a visit combines easily with other islands in the Cyclades. There are regular high-speed ferry services to several of them including Naxos, Paros, the party-island of Ios and Santorini which perches along the rim of an extinct volcano. Accommodation in Mykonos for Older People’s HolidaysHaving only a short stroll to reach the large choice of restaurants and shops in Mykonos Town is the best way to make the most of its unique atmosphere, especially for older people. Accommodation there ranges from simple rooms, usually with TV, fridge and en-suite shower, to small 4-star hotels. So for seniors, it is better to stay there than in one of the coastal resorts which are favoured by the young who want to be near the beach clubs for late-night partying. Shopping for Seniors in MykonosThe centre of Mykonos town is a maze of narrow traffic-free cobbled alleyways, many shaded by bougainvillaea, which slope gently down to its attractive waterfront promenade. The alleys are crammed with smart little shops selling not only souvenirs and beachwear but also designer clothes, hand-embroidered linen and top-quality jewellery. Mykonos for GaysMany of the fashion shops cater specifically for men as the island is a popular gay destination. Women should look out especially for Soho Soho, whose shop is a favourite with celebrities like "Sex and the City"’s Sarah Jessica Parker. Mykonos Bars and RestaurantsIn between the shops and along the waterfronts, there are bars, tavernas and restaurants. These spill out onto the cobbles to enable drinkers and diners to enjoy the warm evening air. Closer inspection reveals, dotted amongst them, many tiny gleaming white churches with blue domes as well as the Zoodohospigi cathedral and the two-floor Panagia Paraportiani complex of fine churches. Mykonos WindmillsBehind the main shopping area, four old windmills stand on a hilly promontory overlooking the sea. Much photographed, they are also in the best spot to watch the sun set over distant islands. Nearby is the equally picturesque Alefkandra quarter, which is nicknamed Little Venice because of its old waterside buildings with wooden Venetian-style balconies. Mykonos Archaeological Museum Archaeological Museum Near the Port Reflects the Island’s Long HistoryThe exhibits, mainly pottery, are mainly around 4500 years old. They include a large jar from the 6th century BC with has a relief depicting the wooden horse of the Trojan War. Mykonos Bus Services are Practical for SeniorsAn excellent network of bus services make it easy and practical for seniors to explore Mykonos without the need to hire a car. Buses run regularly every 30 minutes from about 9am from the edge of Mykonos Town to the two main beaches, Plati Yialos and Paradise, which are at the foot of barren sun-baked hillsides. The journey to both takes about 20 minutes. Mykonos Nude and Gay BeachesFrom Paradise beach, small boats ferry people on to two more beaches, Super Paradise and Elia. Both of these are popular with both nudists and gays. So Mykonos certainly has a wide appeal!
